What a Girl Wants was the second single released from Christina Aguilera’s 1999 eponymous debut album. The first single Genie in a Bottle was a massive hit worldwide, topping the Hot 100 chart in the US, and What a Girl Wants followed suit by topping the Hot 100 chart as well.
“The song was described as a pop and R&B track and had similarities to “Genie in a Bottle”. It received positive reviews from music critics, who described it as a “light” song and compared Aguilera’s vocals on the track to those of Mariah Carey.” – via Christina Aguilera’s Wikipedia page.
She followed up What a Girl Wants with two more singles from the album. I Turn to You peaked at number three on the Hot 100 and Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You) hit number one on the Hot 100 chart in 2000.

Back in 1998, Eddie invited Chris Connelly from MTV into his home to tour his home studio. During the segment, Eddie shares with Chris that Van Halen’s Diver Down album was the reason why he created the studio. Diver Down was widely criticized for containing so many cover songs, so Eddie figured he’d rather bomb with his own music, than be known as the world’s biggest cover band. Their own music definitely didn’t bomb…

Jerry Maguire was and still is one of my favorite movies from the ’90s. It was also one of those rare movies that appealed equally to both men and women. It also had some of the most remembered scenes in movie history. How many times have you said, “Show me the money!”, “You complete me.”, or “You had me at hello.” These are three lines that will live on forever thanks to Jerry Maguire.

Days of Thunder was released to theaters on June 27, 1990 and starred Tom Cruise as Cole Trickle, a young hot shot race car driver who is recruited to race in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. After a really bad wreck, Cole overcomes his fears at the end of the movie in an epic Daytona 500 race.

On May 20, 1998, 13-year old Scarlett Johansson appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman. During the interview, Johansson revealed that she told a little white lie to Robert Redford in order to convince him to cast her in the movie, The Horse Whisperer. Lucky for her, her little white lie turned into a breakthrough performance in the movie, and she was nominated for the Chicago Film Critics Association’s Award for Most Promising Actress.

In 1990, Madonna scored one of the biggest hits of her entire career with Vogue, the first single released from Madonna’s I’m Breathless: Music from and inspired by the Film Dick Tracy album. Vogue topped the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Dance Club charts in 1990. Madonna performed Vogue during her performance during the halftime show of Super Bowl XLVI.
The music video for Vogue was just as successful as the song. It was nominated for nine MTV Video Music Awards, winning Best Direction, Best Editing, and Best Cinematography. The video was also voted number two on MTV’s 100 Greatest Videos Ever Made in 1999.

Jurassic Park was released to theaters in June, 1993, and grossed over $912 million worldwide in its original theatrical release, making it the highest-grossing film of all time (until the release of Titanic in 1997). The film won numerous awards including three Academy Awards for its technical achievements in visual effects and sound design. The film spawned four very successful sequels: The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), Jurassic Park III (2001), Jurassic World (2015), and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), and a fifth sequel, Jurassic World Dominion, scheduled for a 2022 release.

In 1995, Montell Jordan released his debut studio album, This Is How We Do It. The album peaked at number 12 on the Billboard 200, and number four on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The debut single of the same name became Jordan’s biggest hit of his career so far when it topped the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts in 1995. Jordan scored two more number one hits on the R&B charts in the ’90s with Let’s Ride (featuring Mast P and Silkk the Shocker) in 1998 and Get It On Tonite in 1999.

When it comes to hilarious movies from the ’90s, Dumb & Dumber starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels is definitely on my top ten list. The movie was a huge success at the box office taking in over $247 million on a budget of $17 million. There are so many great scenes in the movie, but one of the funniest is when Lloyd and Harry stop and pick up “Mental”, one of the bad guys after them, who was “apparently” stranded on the side of the road. He definitely regretted getting into the van after Lloyd starts making the most annoying sound in the world.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day was one of the greatest sequels in movie history. Released on July 3, 1991 in the United States, the movie grossed over a half a billion dollars at the box office and was the highest grossing film of 1991 and of Schwarzenegger’s career.
One of the best scenes from the movie is when Skynet’s liquid metal Terminator commandeers a huge truck and chases young John Connor on his motorcycle. Arnold Schwarzenegger, playing a Terminator sent back by John Connor and the resistance in the future, comes to Connor’s rescue on a Harley.

In 1990, Nelson released their debut album After the Rain, which produced four top 40 hits on the Hot 100 charts, including a number one for (Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection, and a number six for After the Rain. The other two top 40 hits were More Than Ever (#14) and Only Time Will Tell (#28). They’ve released numerous albums since their debut, but none of the albums have enjoyed the same success as After the Rain. Unfortunately for Nelson, they only enjoyed about a year and a half of commercial success before the grunge rock movement started in earnest with the success of Nirvana’s single Smells Like Teen Spirit, which was released in September of 1991.

Happy Gilmore was released to theaters on February 16, 1996. It starred Adam Sandler as Happy Gilmore, an unsuccessful hockey player who discovers a newfound talent for golf. One of the best scenes in the movie was Happy’s fight with the Price is Right star/host Bob Barker. The fight actually won the movie an MTV Movie Award for Best Fight.

Misery was released to theaters on November 30, 1990 and starred James Caan, Kathy Bates, Lauren Bacall, Richard Farnsworth, and Frances Sternhagen. The film was directed by Rob Reiner, and was based on Stephen King’s 1987 novel by the same name.
There’s one scene in the movie that everyone remembers. It’s the hobbling scene when Annie, played by Kathy Bates, puts a wood block in between Paul’s (played by James Caan) ankles… and whack! This is one of the most intense and horrifying scenes in movie history.

Dazed and Confused was released to theaters on September 24,1993. It was a failure at the box office back then bringing in only $8 million on a $6.9 million budget, but over the years, it’s become one of the most popular movies about life as a teenager in the ’70s, right up there with Fast Times at Ridgemont High. It also starred a number of actors who would go on to bigger and better things in Hollywood like Matthew McConaughey, Renee Zellweger, Ben Affleck, Milla Jovovich, Cole Hauser, and Joey Lauren Adams.

In 1998, Kid Rock released his fourth studio album titled Devil Without A Cause. It was his break-through album, and it produced five top 40 songs on the Mainstream Rock charts and one top 20 song on the Hot 100 charts.
The fifth single released, Only God Knows Why peaked at number five on the Rock charts and number 19 on the Hot 100 charts in 1999. This was the first rock ballad that Kid Rock had recorded, and it was his biggest hit on the Hot 100 charts until another ballad, Picture with Sheryl Crow or Allison Moorer peaked at number four on the Hot 100 and number two on the AC charts. To date, Only God Knows Why and Picture are his two biggest hits on the Hot 100 charts.

In 1995, David Spade and Chris Farley were guests on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. While they weren’t in character, they act, talk, and laugh exactly like they did in Tommy Boy. Farley’s energy is unbelievable. The best part of their appearance on the show though was when the next guest came out. Judith Light, from Who’s the Boss? fame came out, and Chris Farley was completely smitten with her. Throughout Light’s interview, Farley is talking, smiling, and eyeing Light. The best parts of Light’s appearance are the shots showing Farley’s reaction to Light talking.

During the eighth season of Seinfeld in 1996, a Kenny Rogers Roasters opens up a restaurant across from Kramer and Jerry’s apartment building. Specifically, the store’s neon sign shines right into Kramer’s bedroom at night keeping him up all night, so he switches apartments with Jerry. Kramer starts trying to get the restaurant shut down, but Jerry initially opposed Kramer’s efforts because a college friend of his is the assistant manager at the restaurant.
The neon sign drives both Kramer and Jerry crazy, but after tasting the chicken, they both get hooked on it. It’s one of our favorite episodes of Seinfeld.

On January 10, 1991, the late Robin Williams was a guest on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. He was on the show to discuss his new movie Awakenings. As always, Williams’ was unpredictable and hilarious at the same time. Nothing was off limits when Williams started talking, and I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen Johnny Carson laugh so hard at any of his guests.

The Thunder Rolls was the fourth and final single released from Garth Brooks’ second studio album, No Fences. The Thunder Rolls topped the Hot Country charts in 1991 becoming his fifth number one country single in a row, and his sixth number one country single to date.
Brooks co-wrote The Thunder Rolls with Pat Alger, and it was first recorded by Tanya Tucker in the late ’80s with additional lyrics that describe a wife reaching for her pistol to confront her cheating husband. Tucker decided to not release the song, and the rest is history. Garth recorded it himself for his second album, and it became his sixth number one country single.

Creep was Radiohead’s very first single released from their 1992 debut album Pablo Honey. It peaked at number 34 on the Hot 100 charts, number two on the Alternative Airplay charts, and number 20 on the Mainstream Rock charts. They’ve released numerous albums and singles over the years, but Creep is still their biggest hit on the charts, and their most recognizable song.

In 1997, The Cardigans scored the biggest hit of their career when their re-release of Lovefool topped the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart and peaked at number two on the Adult Top 40 and Billboard Radio Songs charts. They had previously released the song as a single in 1996 as the first single from their 1996 First Band on the Moon album, but when the song was included on the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack in 1996, the song’s popularity in the United States took off!

The Rembrandts can thank R.E.M. for the success of I’ll Be There For You. R.E.M. were originally asked to allow one of their songs to be used as the Friends theme song, but they declined. So, I’ll Be There For You was written by David Crane, Mart Kauffman, Michael Skloff, and Allee Willis, and Warner Bros. Television chose the only available band on Warner Bros. Records to record the song, The Rembrandts. It turned out to be a great move for The Rembrandts as I’ll Be There For You went to number on on the AC and Mainstream Top 40 charts.
Surprisingly, the band’s debut single back in 1990, Just the Way It Is, Baby is their highest charting single on the Billboard Hot 100 charts when it peaked at number 14. I’ll Be There For You peaked at number 17 on the Hot 100 charts in 1995.
However, they’ll always be linked to the theme song for one of the most popular sitcoms in TV history, Friends. In 1995, Shania Twain released her second studio album titled The Woman In Me, and the album produced four number one singles on the Hot Country charts. In 2006, CMT ranked The Woman In Me at number eight on its list of the 40 Greatest Albums in Country Music. The album is also credited with having influenced the sound of contemporary country music.
Twain released eight singles from the album, and all but one were top 30 hits on the country charts, including four number one hits for Any Man of Mine, (If You’re Not in It for Love) I’m Outta Here!, You Win My Love, and No One Needs to Know.

Throughout the ’90s, one of the best sketches on Saturday Night Live was Celebrity Jeopardy, and the best characters on the show was Darrel Hammond as Sean Connery.
