In 1995, prop comedian Carrot Top appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and he killed it! Carrot Top’s routine is pretty simple. He pulls out different prop items from a couple of large trunks on the stage and describes them in funny one-liners. For the most part, every prop on this night was a homerun, and the few that weren’t, were funny due to his self-deprecating humor.

Every now and then, we like to feature videos of our favorite bands from the ’90s doing something really cool these days, and this video from 2018 is pretty freaking cool!
In 2018 during a Foo Fighters concert in Austin, Texas, Dave Grohl noticed a guy with Kiss face paint on who had a sign that said, “Let me play Monkey Wrench”. Kiss guy’s name is Yayo Sanchez, and the stars were aligned for him that night. Not only did Dave Grohl notice his face and his sign, but he actually asked him to come on stage with the band. Once on stage, Kiss guy took over, and this remains one of the coolest “once in a million” moments I’ve ever seen. Tommy Boy is hand’s down one of our all time favorite movies. The entire movie is hilarious, but there are two scenes we love more than any others. Both scenes are about not taking no for an answer. Unfortunately, in the first scene, Tommy’s doing exactly what you’re not supposed to do when told no, but in the second scene, Tommy has an epiphany when he persuades a waitress to turn back on the fryer and make him some chicken wings. Tommy want wingy!

Meredith Brooks scored the biggest hit of her career in 1997 when her single Bitch (also known as Nothing in Between in its censored form) went to number one on the Mainstream Top 40 chart as well as number two on the Hot 100 chart. The song was ranked at number 79 on VH1’s “100 Greatest Songs of the ’90s”, and was nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song at the 40th Annual Grammy Awards.

In 1992, Sophie B. Hawkins scored the biggest hit of her career with Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover, which peaked at number five on the Hot 100 chart. It was the debut single released from her first album Tongues and Tails. Three years later, she scored her second top ten hit on the Hot 100 chart when As I Lay Me Down peaked at number six on the Hot 100 chart. Her first music video was banned, so she made another version that you’re probably familiar with.

Sweet Emotion is one of Aerosmith’s greatest songs! It was first released back in 1975 as the first single from their album Toys in the Attic, which also included their iconic song Walk This Way. In 1991, they re-released Sweet Emotion as a single from their ’91 box set Pandora’s Box. The original version of Sweet Emotion peaked at number 36 on the Hot 100 chart, making it their first top 40 hit, and the ’91 re-issue peaked at number 36 on the Mainstream Rock chart.
While the song was a moderate hit on rock radio in ’91, the music video was a hit on MTV featuring a teenage boy calling a phone sex line, and both he and the phone sex operator “acting” like they were someone else. The video is a homage to 1983’s Risky Business, in that the opening scenes of the young man talking to the woman are almost identical to the scenes in the film of Tom Cruise’s character talking on the phone to the call girl.

In 1991, Brooks & Dunn released their debut album, Brand New Man, and it was an instant success, peaking at number three on the Billboard Country Albums chart and number ten on the Billboard Albums chart. All five singles released from the album were top ten hits, including four number one hits. The first number one hit was the debut single, Brand New Man.

The great Don Rickles was on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 1996, and in typical Don Rickles fashion, he insulted anything and everyone to the delight of the audience. No comedian in history could make a crowd laugh more by insulting them than Don Rickles. The man was a comedic legend, and in this appearance in 1996, he was joined on stage by Italian actor/comedian Roberto Benigni who couldn’t get enough of Don Rickles. He went absolutely crazy jumping into the arms of audience members, Rickles himself, Leno’s shoulders, and at one point he started taking off his clothes. You’ve gotta see this one to believe it. Benigni is nuts!

My Hero was the final single released from the Foo Fighters’ second studio album The Colour and the Shape. It was a top ten hit on both the Alt Rock and the Mainstream Rock charts. Many have speculated over the years that the song was about Dave Grohl’s good friend and bandmate in Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, but Grohl has always maintained that the song is dedicated to ordinary, everyday heroes, as he himself never had musical or sports heroes growing up as a child.
During this appearance on the Howard Stern Show in 1999, Stern asked Grohl who the song was about, and he reiterated that it was written about every day heroes, but when co-host Robin Quivers said she thought the song is about Kurt Cobain, Grohl replied, “Hmm, maybe.”

During a season eight episode of Cheers that aired on January 18, 1990, mailman and Cheers bar regular Cliff Clavin appeared as a contestant on the game show Jeopardy!. Because the categories from round one were as Woody described them, “Mr. Clavin’s Dream Board”, Cliff went into the Final Jeopardy round with more than twice the amount of the second place contestant. The categories in the first round truly were tailor-made for Cliff: “Civil Servants”, “Stamps from Around The World”, “Mothers and Sons”, “Beer”, “Bar Trivia”, and “Celibacy”.

Limp Bizkit’s Nookie was the first single released from their second studio album Significant Other. Lead singer Fred Durst said this about the song, “It’s about my ex-girlfriend, how she treated me like sh*t, and I couldn’t leave her, wouldn’t get over it,” he said. “She screwed my friends and used me for my money. I tried to figure out why I did it, and I figured I did it all for the nookie.”
It was the band’s break-through hit as it peaked at number three on the Alt Rock chart and number six on the Mainstream Rock chart in 1999. They followed it up with a number one hit on the Alt Rock chart for Re-Arranged.

In 1995, White Zombie released their fourth and final album titled Astro-Creep: 2000. The first single released from the album, More Human Than Human became their first top ten rock song peaking at number ten on the Mainstream Rock chart and number seven on the Alternative Rock chart. The music video for More Human Than Human was the first video that Rob Zombie directed by himself, and in 1995, Zombie won the MTV Video Music Award for Hard Rock Video.

In 1999, Chris Rock released his third solo HBO comedy special called Chris Rock: Bigger & Blacker recorded live at Harlem’s Apollo Theater in New York City. In 1991, Extreme scored one of the biggest hits of the year with their single More Than Words, which peaked at number one on the Hot 100 chart. The music video was a huge part of the success of the song. It was a simple, black & white video of lead singer Gary Cherone and guitarist Nuno Bettencourt sitting together while Cheron sang the song and Bettencourt strummed along with his guitar and provided backup vocals. The rest of the band sat around watching them, and in 2015, SNL alums Jack Black and Jimmy Fallon recreated the video for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. They did an amazing job recreating all the mannerisms of both Cherone and Fallon from the 1991 video, but of course, it’s also hilarious watching Jack Black recreate Gary Cherone.

In 1998, Korn released their third studio album titled Follow the Leader. The album produced one of their most memorable songs, Freak on a Leash, which peaked at number six on the Alt Rock charts, and number ten on the Mainstream Rock charts in 1999.
The music video for Freak on a Leash was extremely popular on MTV and won awards for Best Editing and Best Rock Video at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards, and later received the Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video in 2000. It became the ninth video that was retired from Total Request Live on May 11, 1999.

If you were like me, the 2022 Super Bowl Halftime Show was an awesome flashback to your youth back in the ’90s! The ’90s produced some of the best Rap and R&B records of all time, and watching Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and Mary J. Blige killing it on the stage as the Super Bowl was incredible. They all looked and sounded as good as ever! I found myself asking Siri how old each one of them are now, and being in awe at how awesome they looked, sounded, and performed.
Now that the hoopla from the Super Bowl has subsided, I thought it would be cool to look back at the first big hit from each of the performers at this year’s halftime show. So, enjoy this flashback to the beginning with Dr. Dre’s Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang featuring Snoop Doggy Dogg, a number one Rap and R&B hit from 1992. Next, we have Snoop Doggy Dogg’s debut single in 1993, What’s My Name?, a top ten hit on the Hot 100 and R&B charts.
Then, we have Eminem’s video for his 1999 top ten Rap song My Name Is, followed by Mary J. Blige’s number one R&B song from 1992, You Remind Me. Saving Private Ryan was one of the most intense movies I’ve every watched. The opening scene portraying the storming of Omaha Beach during the Normandy landings is almost too painful to watch knowing that it was every bit as horrific, if not more, in real life. Glengarry Glen Ross was released to theaters on October 2, 1992. Though it was a box office failure, it was critically acclaimed and is now considered a cult classic. The world premiere was held at the 49th Venice Film Festival, where Jack Lemmon was awarded the Volpi Cup for Best Actor, and Al Pacino was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor.
One of the best scenes from the movie, and one of the best scenes in history to us, is the sales meeting scene where Blake, played by Alec Baldwin, is sent by Mitch and Murray, the owners of Premiere Properties, to motivate the sales team. He unleashes a torrent of verbal abuse on the salesmen and says that only the top two salesmen will be allowed access to the more promising Glengarry leads and the rest of them will be fired within two weeks.

During the 1992 Super Bowl between the Washington Redskins and the Buffalo Bills, one of the most famous Super Bowl commercials of all time ran that featured Cindy Crawford drinking a Pepsi in a newly redesigned can. Almost everyone in the world had their eyes on Cindy except for the two little boys watching in the commercial… apparently, they were more impressed with Pepsi’s new design on the can. Uh huh… yea right!

In 1994, the Beastie Boys released their fourth studio album titled III Communication. The first single released from the album was Sabotage, which was a minor hit on the Alt Rock charts, peaking at number 18. However, the music video for Sabotage was extremely popular and was played extensively on MTV. The video is a homage to, and parody of, 1970s crime drama shows such as Hawaii Five-O, The Streets of San Francisco, S.W.A.T., Baretta, and Starsky and Hutch.
At the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards, the music video for Sabotage was nominated for five awards including Video of the Year, but it lost all of them to R.E.M.’s Everybody Hurts video. During R.E.M. lead singer Michael Stipe’s acceptance speech for the Best Direction award, Beastie Boys member MCA bum-rushed the stage (see video below) in his “Nathaniel Hornblower” disguise, interrupting Stipe to protest the shutout of Sabotage from every category it was nominated in.
Years later at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Sabotage’s video won best video in a new category for Best Video (That Should Have Won a Moonman)!

Wayne’s World was released to theaters on Valentine’s Day in 1992. It starred Mike Myers and Dana Carvey as Wayne and Garth, a pair of rock music fans who broadcast a public-access TV show. This was Myers’s feature film debut, and it was the tenth-highest-grossing film of 1992 and remains the highest-grossing film ever based on a Saturday Night Live sketch. The film had a star-studded cast featuring Tia Carrere, Rob Lowe, Lara Flynn Boyle, Brian Doyle-Murray, Chris Farley, Ed O’Neill, Ione Skye, Meat Loaf and Alice Cooper in supporting roles.

1999’s Office Space is one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen. At the time, it was a failure at the box office, but after repeated airings throughout the years on channels like Comedy Central, it has developed a cult following and scenes like this one where Peter’s boss asks him if he got the memo about the TPS reports have been shared as gifs and memes a million times over the years.

In 1996, Alice in Chains recorded a live album and DVD for MTV’s Unplugged series. It was recorded live on April 10, 1996 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Majestic Theatre. The first song they played was Nutshell, and their performance of this song is considered by many to be one of the greatest MTV unplugged performances of all time.
This concert was Alice in Chains’ first concert in two-and-a-half years, and from mid-1996 onward, lead singer Layne Staley stepped out of the public spotlight and never performed live again. Sadly, he struggled with depression and heroin addiction for most of his adult life, and he died from a speedball overdose on April 5, 2002, at the young age of 34.

Collective Soul are one of the few ’90s rock bands that achieved success on the charts throughout the ’90s and the 2000s. They’re just a good damn rock band. They released their debut album Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid in 1994, and the debut single Shine was a top twenty hit on the Hot 100 charts, peaking at number 11, and was a number one hit on the Mainstream Rock charts. It’s their highest charting song on the Hot 100 chart to date, but they’ve scored six more number one songs on the Mainstream Rock chart, including four in a row from ’95-’97 with The World I Know, Where the River Flows, Precious Declaration, and Listen. Their other two number one rock songs were 1995’s December and 1999’s Heavy.

When we think of the greatest movies from the ’90s, Home Alone is definitely on our top ten list, and the booby traps scenes are the absolute best! Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are hilarious as two bumbling idiots who fall for one booby trap after another. It doesn’t matter how many times I watch this movie, it still cracks me up when Marv (Daniel Stern) lets out a bone-curdling scream when Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) puts a tarantula on his face.
