The Verve burst onto the American music scene in 1997 when they released their album Urban Hymns, and the first single, Bitter Sweet Symphony, peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number four on the Alt Rock chart. The music video was also very popular on MTV and received three MTV VMA award nominations.
