In 1992, Nirvana were the musical guests on Saturday Night Live, and they performed their signature song Smells Like Teen Spirit, which had peaked at number six on the Hot 100 charts and number one on the Alternative Airplay charts in 1991. They also famously destroyed their instruments and the amps at the end of the show.
