My Hero was the final single released from the Foo Fighters’ second studio album The Colour and the Shape. It was a top ten hit on both the Alt Rock and the Mainstream Rock charts. Many have speculated over the years that the song was about Dave Grohl’s good friend and bandmate in Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, but Grohl has always maintained that the song is dedicated to ordinary, everyday heroes, as he himself never had musical or sports heroes growing up as a child.
During this appearance on the Howard Stern Show in 1999, Stern asked Grohl who the song was about, and he reiterated that it was written about every day heroes, but when co-host Robin Quivers said she thought the song is about Kurt Cobain, Grohl replied, “Hmm, maybe.”
No matter who it’s about, it’s an awesome song, and this live acoustic version is incredible. Enjoy this look back at Dave Grohl performing My Hero live on the Howard Stern Show in 1999.
