In 1990, Steve Earle released his fourth studio album called The Hard Way. The first single released from the album was The Other Kind, which peaked at number 37 on the Mainstream Rock charts in 1990. Throughout the late ’80s and the ’90s, the charts struggled to figure out if Earle was a country singer or a rock singer. For the most part, country radio considered him a rock singer and none of his ’90s singles charted on the Hot Country chart. Earle, who struggled with heroin addiction for years was arrested in 1993 for possession of heroin and in 1994, for cocaine and weapons possession. He was sentenced to a year in jail, but was released after serving 60 days for his sentence. He completed an outpatient drug treatment program, and has used his experience as a recovering heroin addict in his songwriting ever since.
